Race Shapes Up For 3rd District Supervisorial Seat

The Third District seat on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors represents the communities of Encinitas, Solana Beach, Del Mar, Escondido, and much of the North County I 15 corridor.

Five candidates have signed up to run for the first open seat on the county board in well over a decade. Four are Republicans and one a Democrat.

Steve Danon is chief of staff for Republican Congressman Brian Bilbray. He’s campaigned for the supervisor’s seat for the last two years and has won many powerful endorsements.

Del Mar Mayor Carl Hilliard, deputy county counsel Bryan Ziegler and film industry transportation supervisor Stephen Pate round out the Republican field.

Dave Roberts, the lone Democrat, is currently deputy mayor of Solana Beach. The last time a Democrat was elected to the Board of Supervisors was when Leon Williams served in the 1980s.

If no one gets more than 50 percent of the vote in June, there will be a runoff for the supervisor’s seat in November.

Supervisor Pam Slater Price has promised to reveal whom she will endorse to succeed her later this week.
