San Diego politics expert reacts to Trump Harris debate
The economy, a federal abortion ban, immigration, even debunked allegations of immigrants stealing and eating family pets dominated Tuesday night’s debate. Little was said about the future of America’s democratic norms, and it provided little assurance.
UC San Diego political science professor Thad Kousser joined KPBS to talk about the debate. He said former President Donald Trump's refusal to commit to accepting the results of the November presidential election is a dangerous harbinger for democracy.
"That set us on the path that we saw on January 6 and, and the path that we could still be on," Kousser said. "Because there are really two things that we know for certain right now, this will be a very close election and Donald Trump will claim victory, And that is going to make this yet again a challenge to our institutions and to our democratic norms."
