LGBTQ+ migrants in Tijuana have a new place to seek support

LGBTQ+ migrants in Tijuana have a new place to seek support.

On Friday, Casa de Luz Tijuana celebrated its grand opening.

"Just in the last five years 3,000 LGBTQIA people have been killed in Central America. There are still 60 countries where it’s illegal to have a same sex relationship," said Casa de Luz founder Jack Nooren. "And there are still seven countries around the world where you are put to death if you are part of a same sex relationship."

Five years ago, Nooren came to Tijuana and learned about the unique struggles LGBTQIA+ refugees face in Tijuana.

“I decided after being involved for a few years and having a successful career in real estate that I wanted to do something in a big way and so I acquired the house behind us,” Nooren said.

Nooren said Casa de Luz Tijuana turned the original building into 20 dorm rooms with three staff quarters and they can house up to 60 refugees.
