Tijuana Día de Muertos altar honors local journalists

In Tijuana, a Día de Muertos altar honors journalists killed in Mexico. It features broken cameras, a bullet-ridden laptop and a typewriter to represent the risks they’ve taken and the sacrifices they made. The ofrenda is displayed at Centro Estatal de las Artes Tijuana (CEART) Tijuana, and is a part of UNESCO’s campaign to end impunity for crimes against journalists, observed on Nov. 2.

Local journalist Vicente Calderón said each murder of a journalist sends a message of fear, impacting press freedom and the public’s right to information.

Mexico ranks 8th on the global index for unsolved journalist murders. Calderón and his colleagues hope that new leadership — including recently sworn in President Claudia Sheinbaum — will bring meaningful change, as the violence against reporters endangers not only their lives but also the critical stories they strive to tell.
