Earlier this year, Daniela Vega of "A Fantastic Woman" made history as the first openly transgender person to be a presenter at the Academy Awards. The movie took home the best foreign film Oscar while Yance Ford also made Oscar history by being the first trans director to earn the nomination for best documentary for the film "Strong Island."
The 2018 Oscars pointed to the increased visibility of underrepresented communities. The Academy still has a long way to go to reflect the diversity of the world beyond Hollywood’s borders but it does represent progress.
Since San Diego’s LGBTQ film festival FilmOut celebrates its 20th anniversary this year I thought it would be a good time to reflect on the state of LGBTQ cinema and what a festival focusing on that community might need to look like moving forward.
The festival runs June 7 - 10 at North Park Observatory.
For this podcast, I will speak with the founder of FilmOut, Joe Ferrelli, who created the festival as part of his thesis project for San Diego State University. I will also speak with its current programmer Michael McQuiggan.
And I check in with filmmakers premiering their films at FilmOut 2018: Sam Wineman ("The Quiet Room"); Matthew Montgomery ("Devil's Path"); Chris Phillips ("Night Shift"); Stan Madray ("Hook Up"); and Neal Mulani ("Fish Tank").
