Organizations that provide housing for the homeless around San Diego County have been awarded a total of nearly $15 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The San Diego region's share was part of $275 million that went to the state of California.
In all, HUD announced $1.58 billion in awards in its Continuum of Care grant competition. Another $300 million in funding is scheduled to be issued in the spring.
"A safe, stable home is the foundation for opportunity in all of our lives," HUD Secretary Julian Castro said Tuesday. "That's why we're continuing to challenge communities to deploy proven strategies to help people experiencing homelessness find a place to call home.
"Through unprecedented partnership among every level of government and private, nonprofit and philanthropic organizations, we know this goal is not just aspirational — it's achievable," Castro said.
The largest local grants included about $2 million for the San Diego Housing Commission, around $1 million for county rental assistance programs, and nearly $672,000 for PATH Connections Housing, which operates a downtown shelter that also provides social services for residents.
Another $720,000 or so will go toward the Homeless Management Information System, a database of homeless people shared by social service agencies.
