Highway Fire Fully Contained After Burning Almost 400 Acres

A wildfire that blackened almost 400 acres in northeastern San Diego County, jumped major roadways, threatened homes and forced evacuations was contained Thursday night.

Cal Fire originally told City News Service the fire burned up to 600 acres, but the agency now reports the blaze charred 380 acres.

The non-injury blaze, dubbed the Highway Fire, erupted for unknown reasons near state Route 76 and Old Highway 395 in the Deer Springs area about 1 p.m. Wednesday, Cal Fire reported.

Stretches of Interstate 15, Old Highway 395 and state Route 76 were closed for several hours as crews battled the blaze.

No structural damage was reported.

Almost 600 households were contacted via a "reverse 911'' system that urged residents to vacate their homes for safety's sake, and a temporary shelter was established at Fallbrook High School. The evacuation order was lifted Wednesday night, according to Cal Fire.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
