Trolley service has been resumed and people are now allowed to enter the previously blocked off areas of San Diego State University's campus after a suspicious item was reported at the transit center. Earlier in the day, transit security called in a suspicious-looking bag. A bomb-sniffing dog was brought in and it was determined that the bag did have some sort of chemical on it, but the chemical was not explosive.

Throughout the investigation, police caution tape blocked off several buildings and areas near SDSU's transit center. Additionally, a mass text message blast was sent out alerting people that Aztec Center was closed and to avoid the area. People were evacuated from Aztec Center, the Adams Humanities building and a nearby apartment complex. Trolley service was also suspended during the investigation.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
