A heat wave is expected over Southern California later this week. San Diego’s inland temperatures could break 100 degrees and desert highs could reach record levels by Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
“We’ve had a relatively mild August, so it will seem warmer,” says meteorologist Stan Wasowski.
A warm air mass accompanied by low humidity levels will cause temperatures to rise across Southern California, Wasowski says. Triple-digit temperatures are forecast for the inland areas on Thursday and Friday. In Borrego Springs, temperatures could peak at 116 degrees.
Wasowski says the heat wave is expected to plateau on Saturday, followed by a slight cooling trend.
