The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) today took a significant step in its ongoing effort to approve a multi-billion dollar package to beef up transit.
After a contested SANDAG meeting, the board voted to approve a guiding document saying among other things they will work with unions and the National Black Contractors Association leading up to the multi-billion dollar regional plan.
"Important that we have that voice at the table," said SANDAG board member and National City Mayor Alejandra Sotelo-Solis.
Yet, some of Sotelo-Solis' colleagues said the resolution that ultimately came to a vote was not inclusive enough. One was La Mesa Councilmember Jack Shu.
"You may have apprenticeship programs, other open shop programs that need to be included and that’s why I wanted inclusive language rather than specifying one specific organization," Shu said.
Representatives from the National Black Contractors Association said the guiding document is a good first step. But they said it remains to be seen if SANDAG is truly committed to equity. Final approval for a multi-billion dollar transit overhaul is expected in the coming months.
