Strong Winds Fan Deadly Fires In Baja California

It was another dangerous week for fire conditions. Several deaths are linked to wildfires in Baja California, including parts of Rosarito. Major fires also burned north of the Bay Area and near Los Angeles as the region contended with the latest round of dry, windy weather. In San Diego County, the school year in Julian may have to be extended due to several missed days. Classes have been canceled as a result of precautionary power outages by SDG&E.

Taking Sides In The Auto Emissions Fight

Several car companies announced this week that they will side with the Trump administration as it insists the federal government sets a universal auto emission standard. California has held a waiver for decades to pursue mileage rates that are more efficient than the federal standard. The issue is at the heart of combating climate change. This week, the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego hosted a leading climate scientist in an outreach to members who are making climate activism part of their faith.

SDSU College Republicans Embrace Trumpism

The College Republicans at San Diego State University recently rebooted their presence on campus. Part of it includes a vibrant social media persona, in which the group describes itself as "unapologetically nationalist." The move is a full embrace of President Trump's policies and tactics, and shows his appeal to a younger generation of conservatives.
