It's apparently not too early to think about the next election, not just in 2018, but in 2020.
On Tuesday night, San Diego City Councilman David Alvarez announced he's running for San Diego County's Board of Supervisors in the District 1 seat. Supervisor Greg Cox will be termed out of the seat in 2020.
Alvarez told KPBS on Wednesday that he would love to continue serving as a council member if he could, but he'll be termed out in 2018.
"As I was looking at what I could do next to continue to provide public service, this was the next thing that made sense," he said.
Alvarez said he'll focus his campaign on ways he feels the supervisors could do more.
"A lot of people are really not impressed with what the county has not done to serve people," he said.
He said areas of improvement include spending more funds on mental health, addressing homelessness and giving people better access to food stamps.
"I hope I can get people focused around those issues as I campaign, and take that into office if I win," Alvarez said.
No one else has announced their candidacy for the office.
