Faulconer and Fletcher had the most heated exchange of the debate. It centered on public safety and Fletcher having switched political parties in the last mayoral election.

As the special mayoral election reaches its final days, the race for second place is a neck-and-neck sprint between San Diego Councilman David Alvarez and former Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, according to the latest 10News/U-T San Diego poll.

The poll shows Councilman Kevin Faulconer maintaining a comfortable lead with 40 percent of the vote. But Faulconer's lead is not likely to garner 50 percent or higher to win the election outright.

That means the race for second place is key for a run-off election. Since the last 10News/U-T San Diego poll was released two weeks ago, Alvarez has seen a nine percent increase. Although Fletcher still leads at 24 percent, Alvarez closely trails at 22 percent.

San Diego's County's growing Latino vote could be the key factor that determines which candidate comes in second. The poll highlights how the vote might influence outcome:

Latinos today divide this way: 34%, a plurality, vote for Alvarez. 31% vote for Faulconer. 27% vote for Fletcher. A larger than expected Latino turnout favors Alvarez. A smaller than anticipated Latino turnout favors Fletcher.
