Former President Bill Clinton highlighted San Diego's innovative culture and even its politics at a campaign rally at UC Irvine Tuesday night.
"I should be on the payroll of the city of San Diego, because they're my exhibit A about why creative cooperation works better than constant conflict," he said.
Clinton referenced how he worked with Mayor Jerry Sanders, a Republican, to pass legislation to put 100,000 police on the street.
At the rally, Clinton endorsed five Democratic congressional candidates, including Scott Peters
"If you vote for him, every day he could stand up on the floor of Congress and give one-minute speeches saying, 'let me tell you one more San Diego story, let me tell you how we did it with Democrats and Republicans making a better future, because we live in tomorrow not yesterday.'" said Clinton.
Peters is in a tight race with Republican Congressman Brian Bilbray for the newly redrawn 52nd Congressional District. Both parties are battling for control of Congress in the November 6 general election.
Bilbray used the endorsement to criticize Peters, once again, for failing to release his tax returns.
Clinton also mentioned Qualcomm founder Irwin Jacobs and UC San Diego during his speech.
