Steve Danon, chief of staff to Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Solana Beach, and the deputy mayor of that coastal city, Dave Roberts, were headed to a runoff Wednesday in their race for a seat on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.
Danon and Roberts were neck-and-neck in the balloting, and Del Mar Mayor Carl Hilliard trailed.
Since no candidate received more than 50 percent needed to win outright, Danon and Roberts will face each other in the Nov. 6 general election. The ultimate winner of the North County seat will be the first new member of the Board of Supervisors in 17 years, succeeding the retiring Pam Slater-Price
District 3 is located in northern San Diego county and includes the communities of Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Escondido, Mira Mesa, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasquitos, and University City.
Danon has been the chief of staff to Congressman Brian Bilbray and worked in both the public and private sector. He has been endorsed by San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, and former California Governor Pete Wilson.
Roberts is currently the Deputy Mayor of Solana Beach and is senior manager for an international nonprofit. He's endorsed by Supervisor Pam Slater-Price and the San Diego City Firefighters.
Hilliard is currently the Mayor of Del Mar and a businessman. He's endorsed by the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association and retired San Diego County Sheriff Bill Kolender.
The San Diego County Board of Supervisors has been 100 per cent Republican since the 1980s. After redistricting in 2010, the district's registered voters are 38 per cent republican, 31 per cent democrat, and 26% independent.
