San Diego would be the first city in the nation to have a street honoring Harvey Milk, the San Francisco County Supervisor who was assassinated in 1979, if the San Diego City Council votes in favor of the change on Tuesday.
A two-block street in Hillcrest, currently called "Blaine Avenue" would be renamed “Harvey Milk Street”.
San Diego City Council member Todd Gloria, who represents District 3 where the street is located, said the LGBT community has a long history in Hillcrest.
“The community members who’ve led this effort have responded to similar efforts on behalf of Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King and other civil rights leaders and I think they’re looking for similar recognition", he said.
Gloria is looking forward to a “yes” vote tomorrow. And he said, he hopes to have street signs in place by Milk’s birthday on May 22nd.
