A San Diego attorney filed paperwork today to run for the newly created ninth City Council District, according to the city clerk's office.
Araceli Martinez, who specializes in family law, will take on current Councilwoman Marti Emerald and Katherine Eaton.
Martinez is affiliated with several labor-backed groups, including the San Diego Middle Class Taxpayers Association that was formed to be a counterweight to the San Diego Taxpayers Association, which they claim is too closely aligned with the business community.
Emerald, who is changing to District 9 from her current area, is also labor friendly. She is switching districts after moving to the College Area following the death of her husband.
The new district runs from around San Diego State University in a southwesterly direction through part of City Heights to Southcrest.
A little less than half of voting-age adults in the district are Latino, but only about 25 percent are registered, according to city Redistricting Commission data.
