Councilwoman Marti Emerald announced today that she will run for re-election next year in the newly formed District 9, where she now lives.
Emerald recently moved from Tierrasanta to the College Area, a change spurred by the death of her husband earlier this year.
District 9 was created by the city's Redistricting Commission after voters approved of a change to San Diego's system of governance. It encompasses part of the area that Emerald already represents, including her new residence near San Diego State University.
"My staff and I have been representing many of the neighborhoods in this new district since I assumed office and we have a great relationship with them," Emerald said. "I look forward to continuing our partnership with these communities and the other neighborhoods in our new district."
The new district runs southwesterly through part of City Heights to Southcrest, and its voting-age population is 44 percent Latino, according to Redistricting Commission data.
Emerald said she would continue to represent residents of her current district until someone is seated in District 9, which is not expected until next December.
She's the first candidate to declare an intention to run in the new district. In her old area, two other candidates, Matthew Kostrinsky and Scott Sherman, have filed to run.
