The city is in the process of carving out a ninth council district, and minority groups want to make sure they’re being heard during the process.
Brian Pollard is on the redistricting committee for San Diego’s 4th council district. He said the city charter requires fair representation of racial and ethnic minorities when district lines are redrawn.
"The whole issue, as far as we can see it, is making sure people who have been historically under-utilized are heard at city hall," he said. "Not that they get a pass, but that the playing field is level."
Representatives from other minority groups joined Pollard at a news conference to express concern about the redistricting process.
The city’s redistricting commission has come up with three draft maps. A final map will be chosen and presented to the public for review at the end of the month.
