The interim president and CEO of the Port of San Diego is interim no more, the Board of Port Commissioners announced today.
Wayne Darbeau, who had been the interim president for about two months, was named president and CEO.
Darbeau has been with the port since 1998, and was recently the vice president of administration.
"We considered a nationwide search for this position, but we realized that the person who has the best qualities to move this organization forward was right here," said Robert Valderrama, the chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners.
"We're elated that we found someone of such high caliber within the organization to lead us into the future."
The Port of San Diego oversees two maritime cargo terminals, a cruise ship terminal, 17 public parks, various wildlife reserves and environmental initiatives, a police department and the leases of more than 600 tenant and sub-tenant businesses around the bay.
The agency is governed by a seven-member Board of Port Commissioners; one commissioner each is appointed by the city councils of Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach and National City, and three commissioners are appointed by the San Diego City Council.
