A campaign to collect clothes for female veterans transitioning into civilian careers kicks off this week.
Operation Dress Code is designed to empower female veterans. While in the military, service members do not have to worry about how they're dressed. That changes once they get out.
"I went in for an interview and had no idea what to wear," said Deputy Secretary for Women Affairs at CalVet Lindsey Sin. Sin is also a U.S. Navy Veteran who knows the challenges of transitioning to life after the military.
"It’s a little bit intimidating," Sin said. "So the point of dress code is to reduce that barrier of not knowing what clothes to wear — not knowing how to wear them — potentially dress for a job interview."
People can now donate professional shoes, clothing and jewelry to help give female veterans with their life after service. Those who want to donate can drop the items off in pink bins at locations across San Diego County over the next two weeks.
Then, early next month, the clothing will be given out to female veterans during an event at the University of San Diego.
