The search is on for a Marine who is believed to have gone overboard from the San Diego-based USS Essex.
The Navy, Marines along with Philippine authorities searched for a Marine believed to have gone in the water at 9:40 a.m. local time, which would have been Wednesday evening California-time.
The USS Essex is in the Sulu Sea, near the Philippines.
In a statement released on social media Capt. Gerald Olin said the search continued Friday.
“It is an all-hands effort to find our missing Marine,” Olin's statement read. “All of our Sailors, Marines, and available assets aboard the USS Essex have been and will continue to be involved in this incredibly important search and rescue operation.”
Multiple searches have been conducted inside the ship while around the clock search continues in the surrounding water, covering more than 3,000 nautical miles.
The Essex is part of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit based at Camp Pendleton. They left in July. Though the family has been notified, the Marines are withholding the name of the missing Marine.
