The Army has identified the woman who committed suicide at Fort Lee Army base on Monday as Sgt. 1st Class Paula M. Walker, 33, of Yonkers, N.Y.
As Home Post reported previously, Walker entered Building 5020 of the Combined Arms Support Command Headquarters on base at about 9 a.m. EDT. She barricaded herself inside the building with a handgun, and then turned the gun on herself.
Walker was declared dead later that morning at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center.
Walker had a twin brother named Paul, who told MailOnline.com he was at a loss as to why his sister took her own life:
"This was totally unseen. I spoke to her a week ago and she was fine and in good spirits. I just don't know, you never know. You never know what's going on in a person’s mind.
"It doesn't make sense to me."
"She was very nice, very sweet and never gave us an ounce of trouble. She always seem to be in good spirits, a happy child, always having fun.
"Paula seemed to have a sense of who she wanted to be."
Virginia television station WTVR-TV has more on Walker's impressive career in the military:
