Brands of almond and peanut butters recalled from store shelves because of possible Salmonella contamination were sold by military commissaries, according to an announcement the Defense Commissary Agency.
The company nSpired Natural Foods, Inc. voluntarily recalled Arrowhead Mills® Peanut Butters, MaraNatha® Almond Butters and Peanut Butters, and private label nut butters (click here for a complete list).
The Defense Commissary Agency's lead consumer safety officer, Richard Stith, said although the recalled products have been removed from store shelves, consumers may have already purchased the butters in question:
"We have confirmed that the commissaries carry these products. Customers should check their pantries and return any products to the commissaries for a refund."
The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta reports there have been four illnesses connected with the recalled peanut and almond butters. The people who fell ill live in Connecticut, Iowa, Tennessee, and Texas. One person needed to be hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.
Salmonella infection can kill, especially in the very young and the very old. The symptoms include (according to the Mayo Clinic):
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal cramps
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Chills
- Headache
- Blood in the stool
