In the second fatal shooting at a military base in less than a week, a Camp Lejeune Marine guard killed a fellow Marine with a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Camp Lejeune spokesman Nat Fahy said the shooting took place around 5:30 p.m Tuesday near the North Carolina base's main gate, according to The Associated Press.
The suspect and the victim were both standing guard inside a guard shack when the alleged shooter used his M4 rifle to fatally wound his colleague.
The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was taken into custody. The victim was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Marine Capt. Joshua Smith explained to Stars and Stripes that terrorism was not a factor in the killing:
“It is being ruled an isolated incident."
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the shooting.
