The U.S. Coast Guard has called off its search for a 34-year-old Navy SEAL who went missing February 19 near Oahu.
The SEAL was assigned to a Hawaii-based Naval Special Warfare unit. As Home Post reported last week, he disappeared during an open ocean training mission near Kaena Point.
Capt. Joanna Nunan, commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector Honolulu, said in a statement released Sunday evening:
“In this case, I have the heartbreak of informing not only the family, but a close-knit military community, that a loved one could not be found."
According to the release, crews from the Coast Guard, Navy, and Marine Corps - along with the Honolulu Fire Department and Ocean Safety - searched more than 24,000 square miles in an attempt to locate the missing SEAL.
The military has not yet released the SEAL's name.
