Memorial Day ceremonies will be held around San Diego County today to commemorate the U.S. men and women who gave their lives in military service.
The Vietnam Veterans of America will honor San Diego County residents who died in the Southeast Asian conflict by reading their names during a 7 a.m. Memorial Day ceremony at the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center in Balboa Park.
Members of the military, public officials, veterans and the public will attend the 110th annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Scheduled to speak at the 8:45 a.m. ceremony is Brig. Gen. Ron Bailey, commanding general of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.
On Saturday, more than 66,000 flags were placed at grave sites at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery by Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and volunteers.
"Holiday at Home'' will be the theme of a 10:30 a.m. parade inKensington for Memorial Day.
At 11 a.m., a Memorial Day ceremony will be held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lakeside. The event will include a Navy helicopter flyover and the U.S. Marine Corps 3rd Air Wing Band. Scheduled to attend is Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-El Cajon, Assemblyman Joel Anderson, R-La Mesa, and county Supervisor Dianne Jacob.
A Memorial Day ceremony will be held atop Mount Soledad in La Jolla at 2 p.m. The ceremony will include a Marine jet flyover, honor guard and music by the Navy Band Southwest Quintet. There will also be a special plaque presentation honoring the late Army Col. Bob Howard, a Medal of Honor recipient for heroism during the Vietnam War.
