This weekend in the arts, you can livestream a jazz quintet (if this is a selling point for you, it will be the jazz flute taking center stage), take on a multi-part Beethoven cycle, see some art exhibitions — either solo or with live performances! — and (virtually) meet writer Julia Alvarez as part of the Art Produce poet-in-residence project. Plus, check out a recently completed vivid mural in Logan Heights. You can even see it from the highway (yes, this weekend truly holds something for everyone's level of social readiness).
Adrien Couvrat, 'Partition'

Quint ONE opens a new contemporary painting installation this weekend, and in true Quint ONE fashion it's a stunner of light and movement. French painter Adrien Couvrat is known for his work that transforms as a viewer moves around it, mostly through his use of striated color and gestured layers. "Gesture" in painting is just what it sounds like — a brushstroke's impact on the physical surface, and Couvrat's works are full of this sort of physicality.
This piece, Couvrat's first solo show in the United States, is called "Partition." It contains 21 individual panels, installed in a grid, that are each said to catch the light differently. From afar it looks almost metallic, but this one begs to get a closer look. Be sure to also book an appointment to see the Alfredo Jaar exhibition at their main gallery space a block away. Jaar's installation will close on April 24.

Anthology Series No. 3: The Music Of Holly Hofmann

Livestreaming platform ElectricLouieLand and Gilbert Castellanos present the next in their anthology series, which showcases a single musician, bringing San Diego performers together to explore their catalogue. Musicians gather to livestream from Avant Garde Music Company San Diego in Chula Vista.
The third installment will be a musical tribute to legendary San Diego flautist Holly Hofmann, featuring Gilbert Castellanos on trumpet, Holly Hofmann herself on flute, Joshua White on piano, John Murray on bass and Tyler Kreutel on drums.
And check out this week's feature on Joshua White, where he recommends five tracks from local musicians who were formative to his own musical development — including one from Holly Hofmann.

More Music: Every Saturday from this weekend through late May, the prestigious Ariel Quartet will tackle a new piece of the Beethoven Cycle, a collection of 16 string quartets. They'll be presenting six works as videos, available at 10 a.m. each Saturday for on-demand viewing just for that week. First up is Beethoven's Quartet in A major, Op. 18, No. 5, from his early period. It's full of joy (and apparently really hard).
'Merge': T.Jay Santa Ana Opening Reception

Filipino-American artist T.Jay Santa Ana opens a new solo show of works in San Ysidro's BLK Box Gallery, opening Saturday and running through May 3. This show features a combination of site-specific mural installations and canvas pieces. Santa Ana's work is packed full of a texture that's as bold as it is delicate — these pieces evoke street art and graffiti, ancient brushed lettering and an inky, turbulent ocean. Santa Ana is as much at home painting a wall mural, a finely detailed drawing, or with a digital piece.
The opening reception will feature live music, drinks and vendors. There'll be DJ sets with Red Martinez and a live performance from Ruby Clouds, which is a sibling duo from San Ysidro and Tijuana.

Ruby Clouds is fantastic and lively, and if you're ready to be around other people and in a somewhat intimate space, it should be memorable.

Poetry Conversations: Julia Alvarez

Catherine Kineavy, the poet-in-residence at Art Produce will be in conversation on Saturday with Julia Alvarez, author of "How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents," "In the Time of the Butterflies," as well as poetry. She also recently wrote a poem about the pandemic, and it's a powerful, sparse work. They'll discuss poetry, writing, community, and take questions from the audience — all on Zoom.

Outdoor Mural: Tatiana Ortiz-Rubio At Bread And Salt

On the same structure as PANCA's iconic ice cream mural, Tatiana Ortiz-Rubio has installed a massive, brightly colored mural and memorial in honor of the #StopThe
Spread movement, funded by the California Department of Public Health. It's a bright and vivid work, a fuchsia background and a face, partially obscured by rich and detailed golden cempasúchil, or Mexican marigolds. Ortiz-Rubio just wrapped up the project earlier this month.
Details: The mural is visible from the south-west side of the building (and from Interstate 5) — right beneath the "&" wall in the alley between Julian Ave and Kearney Ave. Bread and Salt is located at 1955 Julian Ave., Logan Heights.
Closing Soon: While you're in Logan Heights, Tecate-based artist Chantal Peñalosa's solo multidisciplinary exhibition at Best Practice, "There's Something About the Weather of this Place" closes this weekend.
