Democrat Esther Sanchez is the city of Oceanside's first Latina mayor and the first woman to lead the city. She won the most votes of the twelve candidates on the ballot, including two current council members.

Oceanside is San Diego County’s third largest city after San Diego and Chula Vista. It has a long history of electing Republican leadership but the most recent voter registration data show Democrats outnumber Republicans.

Sanchez joined Midday Edition on Tuesday to discuss her priorities for her term as mayor.
