A new school year is usually pretty exciting except when students are facing cutbacks that could affect their academic performance.

Thousands of kids around San Diego County are headed back to school Monday. A new school year can be filled with possibility and promise. But students in the Sweetwater Union High School District, who have been in school for a few weeks already, are facing cutbacks that could affect their academic performance.

Some students and parents in San Ysidro are planning a protest Monday night over cuts to school bus routes and laptops in the district.

Voice of San Diego reporter Will Huntsberry joined Midday Edition on Monday to talk about the cuts.
