On Tuesday, San Diego City Council will vote on a resolution to throw its support behind or against AB-392. The County Board of Supervisors voted to oppose the legislation earlier this month.
The bill was brought forth by San Diego Assemblywoman Shirley Weber who has been trying to create policy to address the standard for police use of force. The bill would raise the deadly force standard from "reasonable" to "necessary." Advocates say a change in the standard would make it easier to prosecute officers who use lethal force unnecessarily. Legal experts question how much impact AB-392 would have on how officers use force.
