The average American generates more than four pounds of trash a day.
I Love A Clean San Diego is teaching people how to reduce that number.
On Saturday, Jan. 28, the nonprofit is holding a zero waste in the home workshop at Ocean Knoll Farm, 701 Bonita Drive, in Encinitas. The workshop starts at 10 a.m. and will include a kids craft corner. People can register for the workshop here.
"We believe that as we educate community members about why zero waste is so important and that it is within their grasp, we believe they will find a passion for the environment inside them. And that passion will spread to friends and neighbors and that will lead to a clean and healthy environment for our future," said Emily Nelson, the education manager for I Love A Clean San Diego.
The workshop will go over what zero waste is, why it's important, what local jurisdictions are doing to support zero waste efforts and individual actions people can take.
Here are a few of those actions:
• Think reusable — reusable water bottles, reusable bags, reusable produce bags, reusable utensils
• Dining in instead of getting takeout often reduces waste
• Look for items with recyclable packaging, such as toilet paper wrapped in paper
• Donate items instead of throwing them away
• Repair things
• Learn about the versatility of baking soda, for example it can be an alternative to toothpaste and used as a cleaning product
