THIS IS KPBS MIDDAY EDITION I MAUREEN CAVANAUGH. PE IS ONE OF THE CLASSES TO GO WHEN THERE IS A BUDGET CUT IN SCHOOLS. AND OFTEN NOT MANY KIDS ARE CRYING ABOUT IT. IT CAN BE AN UNPOPULAR CLASS THAT DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE MUCH TO DO WITH THE REST OF THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM. BUT MANY HEALTH EXPERTS SAY PHYSICAL EDUCATION IS MORE IMPORTANT FOR KIDS NOW THEN AND IT -- EVER BEFORE. THE CDC REPORTS MORE THAN ONE THIRD OF US CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS ARE OVERWEIGHT OR OBESE. A NEWLY OPENED CHARTER SCHOOL IN SAN DIEGO IS TRYING TO STOP THAT TREND, ONE OF EMPOWER SCHOOLS EMPHASES IS ON FITNESS. MORE SPECIFICALLY ON A PROGRAM CALLED CROSSFIT KIDS. JOINING ME TO TALK ABOUT THE PROGRAM ARE DEMI BROWN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF EMPOWER CHARTER SCHOOL AND DEMI, WELCOME TO THE SHOW. THANK YOU. AND LAURA KOJI IS COORDINATOR OF SCHOOL PROGRAMS FOR CROSSFIT KIDS. LAURA, WELCOME. THANK YOU. ME START WITH YOU, LAURA FOR THOSE NOT FAMILIAR WITH CROSSFIT. CAN YOU GIVE US AN IDEA OF WHAT THAT IS ALL ABOUT? HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS ? WELL, CROSSFIT KIDS IS A PROGRAM THAT IS DESIGNED TO INSPIRE KIDS TO JOIN IN FUNCTIONAL FITNESS AND PAIR THAT WAS FUN SO THAT WHEN KIDS ARE WORKING OUT IN PE CLASS THEY ARE HAVING FUN AND THEY WANT TO DEVELOP A LIFELONG LEARNING AND COMMITMENT TO EXERCISE AND HEALTH. THERE IS A CROSSFIT FOR ADULTS, THOUGH, THAT IS WHAT PEOPLE MAY BE MORE FAMILIAR WITH. RIGHT. CROSSFIT FOR ADULTS WITH SOUNDED BY GRAY GLASSMAN AND IT IS WHAT MOST PEOPLE HAVE SEEN ON ESPN AT OUR CROSSFIT GAMES, A HIGHLY INTENSE FUNCTIONAL FITNESS PROGRAM FOR ADULTS AND CROSSFIT KIDS IS VERY DIFFERENT THAN THAT. IT'S A PROGRAM THAT WAS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR THE DEVELOPMENTAL NEEDS OF KIDS. AND SO THE INTENSITY THAT WE ARE MOST FAMILIAR WHEN WE SEE THE ADULT VERSION IS REALLY REMOVED FROM THAT AND IS REPLACED BY FUN WHEN WE TALK ABOUT OUR KIDS PROGRAM. SO IT'S NOT JUST AN EASIER VERSION OF THE ADULT CROSSFIT? IT'S A WHOLE DIFFERENT REWORK EXERCISE PROGRAM SPECIFICALLY FOR CHILDREN ? ABSOLUTELY. IT WAS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY WITH CHILDREN IN MIND. IT'S NOT A SCALED-DOWN VERSION OF THE ADULT CROSSFIT. IT IS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR THE COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENTAL AND NEUROLOGICAL NEEDS OF CHILDREN. NOW, DEMI, AND PART A CHART -- EMPOWER CHARTER SCHOOLS ONLY TO SCHOOL RIGHT? McKAY 25. IS THE FIRST YEAR OF OPERATION ? YES WE OPENED IN THE FALL. WHAT WAS THE REASON YOU WANTED THE CROSSFIT EMPHASIS AND THE CURRICULUM ? WELL LIKE YOU SAID EARLIER, OUR FOCUS IS ON TRYING TO PLAY A ROLE IN THE CHILDHOOD OBESITY ISSUE HAPPENING IN OUR COUNTRY AND WE ARE ONE SMALL SCHOOL THAT WE WANTED TO CREATE A SCHOOL WHERE FITNESS WAS WOVEN INTO THE FABRIC OF WHAT WE DO. SO TWICE A WEEK OUR STUDENTS HAVE A CROSSFIT KIDS PROGRAM AND TWICE A WEEK THEY HAD PE WITH THEIR REGULAR TEACHER AND IT'S MORE OF A SPORTS-BASED PROGRAM AND IN ADDITION TO THAT, WE HAVE HELD INTO OUR THEMATIC UNITS SO INTO THE CLASSROOM AND WE ARE STARTING OF GARDENING PROGRAM. IT TAKES MULTIPLE PLAYERS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT CHILDHOOD OBESITY. IT CANNOT JUST BE SCHOOLS AND IT CANNOT JUST BE FOOD COMPANIES AND PARENTS. IT HAS TO BE ALL THREE WORKING TOGETHER SO WE WILL START OFFERING PARENT WORKSHOPS WERE WE INVITE THE COMMUNITY AND TO THESE WORKSHOPS AS WELL SO IT'S NOT JUST FOR OUR PARENTS OF OUR STUDENTS, IT'S FOR THE GREATER COMMUNITY. CAN YOU GIVE ME EXAMPLES OF HOW SOMETHING ABOUT HEALTH MIGHT BE INTERWOVEN IN ANOTHER SUBJECT? THE THEMATIC UNIT YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT? MAKE SURE. ONE EXAMPLE IS AND SOCIAL STUDIES, SO YOU'RE STUDYING THE CULTURE OF ANOTHER CIVILIZATION AND YOU CAN LOOK AT THEIR DIET AND THEN YOU CAN ANALYZE WAS THEIR DIET BECAUSE OF THE RESOURCES THAT WERE AVAILABLE TO THEM RIGHT THEN? WERE THERE MORE CHOICES INVOLVED? SO THAT IS ONE WAY THAT WE INTEGRATE INTO THE CURRICULUM. WE HAVE HAD OTHER AGENCIES FROM THE COMMUNITY, NATIONAL UNIVERSITY HAD SOME AREN'T STUDENTS COME AND DO LESSONS WITH OUR STUDENTS SO IT'S NOT JUST THE TEACHERS. THIS COMMUNITY ENTITIES THAT HAVE COME INTO OUR CLASSROOM TO SHARE FUN WAYS TO KEEP OUR KIDS HEALTHY, THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP, THAT KIND OF THING. INTERESTING. DEBBIE, WHY DID YOU CHOOSE CROSSFIT AS THE SIGNATURE FITNESS PROGRAM FOR THE SCHOOL ? WELL, FOR A FEW REASONS. I USED TO BE A MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER AND MY COACH FROM MY GYM WOULD COME AND VOLUNTEER ONCE A WEEK TO TEACH MY MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS PE. AND WHEN I SAW THE CHANGE THAT IT MADE AN THEM WITH JUST ONCE A WEEK HE WOULD COME, THEY LOVED IT. AND SUDDENLY THERE WAS HIS KARAMA --, ROTTER YOU SEE IN CROSSFIT GYMS THAT STARTED HAPPENING WITH MY STUDENTS AND I WAS NOT TELLING THEM TO CHEER FOR EACH OTHER AS IF IT'S THE WORKOUT. THEY WERE JUST DOING IT. AND I STARTED TO SEE THE CHANGE AND HOW THEY WERE ACADEMICALLY IN THE CLASSROOM AND THEIR BEHAVIOR. SO WHEN WE WENT TO START THIS SCHOOL WE KNEW FITNESS HAVE TO BE PART OF WHAT WE ARE DOING. ACADEMIC BENEFITS ARE ENORMOUS. THE CHARACTER COMPONENT THAT WE CAN WEAVE THROUGH THE CROSSFIT CLASS IS HUGE. CHEERING EACH OTHER ON BILLS BUILD -- BUILDS SCHOOL COMMUNITY. WHAT I WANTED TO DO WAS -- MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL GO TO THE NEXT CLASS WHERE THEY WERE OFFERING TREATS FOR GETTING A HIGH SCORE IN A TEST OR WHATEVER OR THEY GO HOME AND EATING WHAT THEY ARE EATING AT HOME SO I KNEW IT COULD NOT JUST BE AN ISOLATED CLASS IN THE SCHOOL. IT HAD TO BE ACROSS THE BOARD. YES. LAURA, CAN YOU GIVE US AN IDEA OF WHAT WE WOULD SEE IF WE WERE IN A CROSSFIT TRAINING CLASS AT EMPOWER CHARTER SCHOOL ? YES THE KIDS WOULD START OFF AROUND A WHITEBOARD. EVERYONE GATHERS AROUND A WHITEBOARD WHILE THE TEACHER GOES THROUGH THE WORKOUT OF THE DAY. WHICH WOULD START WITH A WARM-UP, GENERAL WARM UP, GETTING KIDS MOVING, NO ONE STANDING AROUND EVERYONE IS PARTICIPATING IN THE WARM-UP. THEN WE WOULD MOVE ON TO FOCUS WHICH IS WHERE WE TAKE OUR SKILL THAT WE ARE WORKING ON, WHICH COULD BE AN AIR SQUAT OR PUSH PRESS FOR HOLDING A PLANK. WE WOULD CHOOSE ONE GENERAL SKILL AND WE WOULD FOCUS ON HOW TO MOVE TO THAT SKILL PROPERLY. AFTER THAT, WE WOULD MOVE TO THE WORKOUT SO THE KIDS WOULD DO ABOUT A SEVEN-A MINUTE WORKOUT AND THEN WE ALWAYS AND ON THE GAME. A PHYSICAL ACTIVITY GAME WITH A SPECIAL CROSSFIT KIDS TWIST. WE MIGHT DO MUSICAL MEDICINE BALLS WHICH IS A TAKE OFF FROM MUSICAL CHAIRS INSTEAD OF CHAIRS IT'S MEDICINE BALLS. AND THE KIDS ARE MOVING AROUND WITH DIFFERENT MOVEMENTS IT COULD BE THERE MOVING AROUND AT A BEAR CRAWL AND THEN THE MUSIC STOPS AND THEY GO IN SQUAT OVER A MEDICINE BALL. AND THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT WHEN A CHILD MAY NOT FIND A MEDICINE BALL, THEY COME OUT BUT THEY ARE WITH A TRAINER AND STILL DOING THE SAME ACTIVITIES ON THE SIDE AS WELL AS THE KIDS MOVING. SO THE EMPHASIS IS THAT WE IN EVERY CLASS -- AND EVERY CLASS WITH FUNDS SO THEY LEAVE THE EXPERIENCE HAVING HAD FUN AND WANTED TO COME BACK AND DO IT AGAIN. I'M GOING TO SAY A REGULAR PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER TEACH THAT OR DO THEY HAVE TO BE SPECIALLY TRAINED ? THEY DO HAVE TO BE SPECIALLY TRAINED. WE AS TEACHER ATTEND LEVEL I CROSSFIT TRAINER COURSES WHICH GO OVER THE FOUNDATIONAL MOVEMENTS OF CROSSFIT. SO THAT THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT THOSE ARE. AND WE ASK THAT THEY ATTEND OUR CROSSFIT KIDS TRAINER COURSE WHICH SPECIFICALLY DEALS WITH HOW DO WE TAKE CROSSFIT AND THEN HOW DO WE TEACH IT TO CHILDREN AGES THREE THROUGH 18? AND THAT DEALS WITH SPECIFICALLY HOW WE APPROACH CROSSFIT FROM A KIDS PERSPECTIVE. NOW, I WANT TO ASK YOU BOTH THIS PIC THERE HAS BEEN SOME CRITICISM THAT PROGRAMS SUCH AS CROSSFIT ARE TOO STRENUOUS FOR KIDS. EVEN CROSSFIT KIDS IS TOO STRENUOUS FOR KIDS. WHAT IS YOUR RESPONSE TO THAT, LAURA ? I WOULD'VE EITHER THE ONE WHO HAS A CONCERN TO GO INTO A SCHOOL THAT HAS CROSSED THE KIDS IS THE CURRICULUM OR INTO A CROSSFIT BOX THAT HAS A CROSSFIT PROGRAM BECAUSE OFTEN TIMES THAT PERCEPTION COMES FROM THE MIDST OF THE WATCHING THE CROSSFIT GAMES. AND SO THEY THINK THAT THE SAME INTENSITY THAT IT DOES BRING TO THE PROGRAM TRANSFERS OVER TO THE KIDS PROGRAM AND THAT IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE. IT'S A MESS AND THAT OUR FOCUS WITH KIDS IS MECHANICS FIRST, SAFETY IS ALWAYS -- IF THEY MOVED SAFELY FIRST AND THEY ARE DOING IT CONSISTENTLY OVER TIME. AND WHAT HAPPENS IS AS KIDS GROW MATURE THEY BRING THEIR OWN INTENSITY TO IT BUT NEVER AT AN UNSAFE LEVEL BECAUSE THAT IS A COACHES AND TRAINERS WITH POSSIBILITY IS TO MAKE SURE THOSE MECHANICS FOR THEIR CONSISTENTLY AND THAT INTENSITY DOES NOT OVERTAKE AND COMPROMISE THE MECHANICS OF A MOVEMENT. DEMING, WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN SEEING IN THESE CLASSES? IS THE LEVEL OF INTENSITY SOMETHING THAT YOU THINK IS APPROPRIATE FOR KIDS THIS YOUNG ? ABSOLUTELY. THE KIDS ARE HAVING FUN. I WALK THROUGH THE CROSSFIT KIDS CLASS ALL THE TIME BECAUSE IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOMENTS OF THE DAY TO GET THROUGH TO WALK THROUGH AND THESE KIDS ARE DOING THRUSTER. THAT IS REALLY COOL. I'M ON MY WAY TO GO GET A COPY OF SOMETHING BUT THE KIDS ARE SAFE AND ARE MOVING AND HAVING FUN. I HAVE NOT EVER SEEN AN INSTANCE WHEN I'M CONCERNED THAT THE COACH EVEN HAS TO TELL A CHILD TO CALM DOWN. AND THAT IS THE THING WE EMPHASIZE SAFETY AND FUN. THEY ARE DOING A LOT OF RELAY SO THEY DON'T EVEN REALIZE WHAT THEY ARE DOING. THEY JUST KNOW THEY ARE MOVING AND HAVING FUN. ARE YOU TRACKING RESULTS IN SOME WAY? WEATHER THAT IS WEIGHT LOSS OR ENDURANCE? I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE RESULTS WILL BE AT THIS POINT, BUT ARE YOU KEEPING ANY KIND OF LOG ON KIDS PROGRESS IN THIS ? SO WE STARTED CROSSFIT KIDS HAS AN ASSESSMENT WAY YOU CAN COMPARE A CHILD'S -- HOW MANY PUSH-UPS CAN YOU DO IN THIS AMOUNT OF TIME OR COULD YOU DO A PULL-UP OR CAN YOU -- HOW LONG CAN YOU HOLD IN EL CID WHERE YOU PICTURE THE GYMNAST WHEN THEY ARE ON THE RINGS AND ARE SITTING AND THEIR FEET ARE STRAIGHT OUT LIKE AN EL CID. AND KIDS ARE VERY STRONG. SO WE GAVE THEM THAT ASSESSMENT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR AND WILL GIVE THEM THE ASSESSMENT AT THE END OF THE YEAR. AND WE REALIZE THAT WE ALSO NEED TO TRACK BE THE MIT SHOW BECAUSE WE NOTICED WE HAD A LOT OF STUDENTS THAT STARTED THE YEAR AND HAD REALLY SLIMMED DOWN SO WE WILL START TAKING OUR BMIS RIGHT NOW IN THE SPRING AND AT LEAST COMPARE THEM TO THE SUMMER. HAVE THERE BEEN ANY DOWNSIDES? OR HAS THERE BEEN ANY CHALLENGES OF THE SCHOOL AND INCORPORATING CROSSFIT, DEMI ? I THINK ONE OF THE CHALLENGES THAT A LOT OF SCHOOLS FACE IS THAT YOU HAVE A CLASS WITH 20 STUDENTS AND YOU HAVE ONE COACH. AND SO THE COACHES JUST HAVE TO GET CREATIVE BY PARTNERING STUDENTS UP. WHAT WE HAVE STARTED TO DO WITH OURS SMALLEST -- OUR SMALLEST, YOUNGEST, TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN -- WE PUT OUR AIDES TO PUT IT IN THE CLASS TO MAKE IT EASIER BECAUSE LIKE LAUREN WAS SAYING, FORMER MECHANICS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT THAT WE REALLY FOCUS ON SO BY HAVING ANOTHER ADULT PRESENT IN THE ROOM MAKES IT EASIER TO MANAGE AND GIVE THE STUDENTS FEEDBACK ON THEIR FORM. I THINK ANOTHER ISSUE THAT OTHER SCHOOLS PROBABLY FACE INCLUDING OURS IS EQUIPMENT TO. JUMP ROPES, MAPS -- MATS, THAT KIND OF THING. A NEW SCHOOL TRYING TO DEVELOP A PROGRAM SO WE WANT TO GET THAT KIND OF -- THOSE KINDS OF RESOURCES INTO OUR SCHOOL. THE SECONDARY EMPHASIS OF EMPOWER IS LANGUAGE THEM ISN'T THAT RIGHT ? YES. I'M WONDERING HOW MUCH INTEREST IS THERE IN THE SCHOOL WITH THIS COMBINED EMPHASIS OF FITNESS AND LANGUAGE ? WE HAVE SEEN A LOT OF INTEREST. WE HAVE OUR ENROLLMENT HAPPENING NOW AND I CAN ALREADY TELL FROM THE NUMBER OF PARENTS THAT HAVE PUT IN APPLICATIONS FOR NEXT YEAR THAT WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A WAITING LIST HOW LONG THAT WILL BE I'M NOT SURE, BUT WE DO HAVE AN INNOVATIVE SPANISH IMMERSION PROGRAM AND IT'S INTERESTING BECAUSE ONE OF THE TERMS WITH THE VESTIBULAR SYSTEM WHEN THEY TURNED UPSIDE DOWN WHICH OUR STUDENTS DO HANDSTANDS, THEY LOVE TURNING UPSIDE DOWN OR TUMBLE -- THAT NOT ONLY HELPS WITH ATTENTION, BUT ALSO HELPS WITH LANGUAGE ACQUISITION. ISN'T THAT INTERESTING? [ LAUGHTER ] SO HOW LONG IS CROSSFIT KIDS BEEN WRONG, LAURA ? IT'S BEEN AROUND FOR 10 YEARS. ANY OF THE SCHOOLS IN THE SAN DIEGO REGION WERE DOING THE SAME THING AS EMPOWER ? WE HAVE SEVERAL SCHOOLS IN SAN DIEGO AND ABOUT 600 WORLDWIDE. I NOTICED THE ANNUAL CROSSFIT GAMES FOR ADULTS IS COMING UP. HOW POPULAR IS THIS PROGRAM IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ? OH, IT'S GROWING AND GAINING MORE POPULARITY DAILY. IT'S VERY POPULAR. ONCE UPON A TIME, I WOULD BE ASKED MORE OFTEN WHAT IS CROSSFIT. AND THAT IS VERY RARE TO GET THAT QUESTION NOW. IT'S MORE PEOPLE WANTING MORE DETAILS ABOUT CROSSFIT. SO IT HAS DEFINITELY BECOME A COMMONPLACE LANGUAGE WITH PEOPLE. ARE THE CROSSFIT GAMES FOR KIDS ? NO. IT'S NOT A COMPETITION ? RIGHT. WHAT WE FOCUS ON OUR KIDS DOING HER PERSONAL BEST. SO IT'S NOT ME VERSUS THEM. IT'S WHATEVER MY PERSONAL BEST IS TODAY AND WHAT MY PERSONAL BEST IS TOMORROW. SO WE FOCUS ON KIDS WORKING THEIR HARDEST AND TO THEIR CAPACITY. BECAUSE WHAT COMES OUT OF THAT IS THAT KIDS LEARN THAT THEY CAN AND THEN THEY ARE'S -- YOUR SELF-ESTEEM GROWS AND THEY MAKE BETTER DECISIONS BECAUSE SELF-ESTEEM IS HIGHER SO THE INTANGIBLE GIFTS OF CROSSFIT KIDS COME FROM FOSTERING KIDS TO DO THEIR VERY BEST AT WHATEVER THAT IS. AND I THINK THAT IS ONE OF THE BEST PARTS OF THE PROGRAM IS THAT ALL 20 KIDS OR 30 KIDS IN THE CLASSROOM ARE ALL DOING THE SAME THING. THEY MAY BE DOING IT AT DIFFERENT LEVELS, BUT THEY ARE STILL DOING THE SAME THING. SO NO ONE FEELS LIKE AN OUTSIDER BECAUSE THEY CAN'T. RIGHT. WE HEARD FROM YOU, DEMI, THAT YOU YEAR THE KIDS AND THEY ARE HAVING FUN. WHAT ARE THE PARENTS THINGS YOU ? WELL, THE PARENTS ARE REPORTING THAT THEY ARE DOING MORE AIR SQUATS AND SITUPS AT HOME BECAUSE THE KIDS COME HOME YOU KNOW KIDS WATCH TV OR PLAY VIDEO GAMES AND OUR KIDS DO THAT AS WELL. BUT WHAT THEY ARE ADDING TO THEIR SCREEN TIME IS TELLING THEIR PARENTS, HEY, LET'S DO SITUPS TOGETHER AND AIR SQUATS TOGETHER. PARENTS WILL SHARE THAT THEY WENT TO THE PARK AND THE KIDS DESIGNED TO WORK OUT FOR THEM AND HAD THEM DO THE AIR SQUATS. SO PARENTS ARE REPORTING THAT THEIR KIDS ARE LOVING IT AND TAKING IT HOME TO DO IT HOME AND SHARE WITH THEIR FAMILY, WHICH IS GREAT. NOW, AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR I'M A HOW ARE YOU GOING TO ASSESS WHETHER OR NOT CROSSFIT KIDS HAS BEEN A SUCCESS ? WELL, WE WILL LOOK AT THE DATA THAT I MENTIONED EARLIER, JUST THE ASSESSMENT FROM THE PRE-AND POST-ASSESSMENTS THAT WE GIVE AND THE BMI. BUT ALSO WE WILL LOOK AT PARENTS SURVEYS AND STUDENT SURVEYS IT JUST READING LETTERS THAT STUDENTS HAVE WRITTEN TO COUNCILMEMBER SCOTT SHERMAN WHO IS AN ADVOCATE FOR OUR SCHOOL, EVERY SINGLE LETTER TOLD HIM THANK YOU FOR HELPING START THE SCHOOL. WE LOVE DOING CROSSFIT KIDS. THEY SHARE ABOUT HOW SOME DID NOT DO ANY PE AT THEIR OTHER SCHOOL. SO WE WILL JUDGE THE DATA, BUT WE WILL ALSO LOOK AT THE ATTITUDES FROM BOTH STUDENTS AND PARENTS. AND, LAURA, WHAT YOU THINK IS THE MOST ESSENTIAL THING THAT KIDS GET OUT OF CROSSFIT KIDS ? I THINK THE BIGGEST GIFT OF CROSSFIT KIDS IS THAT EVERYONE PARTICIPATES. AND THAT THEY VERY QUICKLY FIND SUCCESS AND THAT THEY CAN DO SOMETHING. REGARDLESS OF WHAT THAT IS. WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT SKILLS AND BECAUSE CROSSFIT KIDS PROVIDES SUCH A VARIED EXPERIENCE OF PHYSICAL CHALLENGES, KIDS QUICKLY FIND THAT THEY ARE ABLE AND THAT IS WHAT KIDS NEED TO FEEL IS THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO DO SOMETHING AND THEN TRANSITIONS INTO THE CLASSROOM. SO IF THEY CAN DO SOMETHING THAT THEY DID NOT BEEN POSSIBLE WHILE WORKING OUT AND HAVING FUN, THEY TAKE THAT SAME ATTITUDE AND ATTACK MASS FOR A CHECK SPELLING OR WHATEVER IT IS BECAUSE ONE, THEY ARE PHYSICALLY READY IN FEEL ABLE AND NUMBER TWO, THE COGNITIVE BENEFITS OF GOING TO SCHOOL AFTER YOU HAVE EXERCISED ARGUMENTS. AND SET A STUDENT OF, THE CHILD UP FOR SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM AS WELL. I WANT TO THANK YOU BOTH FOR SPEAKING WITH US. DEMI BROWN IS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF EMPOWER CHARTER SCHOOLS AND LAURA OJI IS A COORDINATOR OF SCHOOL PROGRAMS FOR CROSSFIT KIDS. THANK YOU BOTH VERY MUCH. THANK YOU.

A new San Diego school is making fitness a priority for its students.

Empower Charter School, which opened in Linda Vista last year, has built the CrossFit Kids Program into its regular curriculum.

Students are required to take four physical education classes a week — as opposed to many schools where students exercise only once a week. The school's founders said it's an attempt to change unhealthy trends among children.

More than one-third of U.S. children and adolescents are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC also reported that only 48 percent of high school students attended physical education classes in an average week.

"Our focus is trying to play a role in the obesity issue that's happening in our country," Demi Brown, the school's executive director, told KPBS Midday Edition on Monday. "We wanted to create a school where fitness is woven in."

But CrossFit Kids isn't a scaled down version of the popular CrossFit some may see on television. CrossFit is a high intensity interval workout that includes Olympic weighlifting, gymnastics and cardio.

Lura Poggi, a coordinator for CrossFit Kids, said it's an exercise program that was designed specifically for children.

"CrossFit Kids is designed to inspire kids to join in functional fitness and pair that with fun," Poggi said.

A typical class includes a warm up, practicing a movement (like an air squat or plank), a workout and a game.

"The emphasis is that we end every single class with fun so kids leave that experience having had fun," Poggi said.

Brown said teaching children about health and fitness isn't the sole responsibility of the school. The school also works with parents to ensure the values are taken home.

"It takes multiple players to do something about childhood obesity," Brown said. "It can't just be schools, it can't just be companies, it can't just be parents. It takes all three together."
