“With the economy on track for slow but steady improvement, nonprofits appear to be shifting from desperation (which characterized much of 2012) to redesigning their internal operations and seeking external cross-sector collaborative partners. By taking action – both proactively and reactively – nonprofit leaders and organizations can continue to enhance the overall economic and mission-focused capacity and impact of San Diego’s nonprofit sector.”

Some facts from the report:

  • There are currently 9,364 501(c)(3) nonprofits in San Diego. The number of nonprofits has been on the decline since peaking in 2010, when there were 10,326 nonprofits in San Diego.
  • Total, San Diego nonprofits have more than $19 billion in assets. Hospitals account for the highest percentage, with more than $7 billion in assets.
  • Religion and human services are the two largest subsectors of San Diego nonprofits.
  • Forty-two percent of San Diego nonprofits operate at a deficit, and 56 percent operate with a budget surplus. Three percent of nonprofits break even.
