Midday Movies: Horrible Imaginings

A new addition to Midday Edition -- the Midday Movies. First up, with Halloween just around the corner, prepare for something scary at the Horrible Imaginings Art Show and Film Festival.

This is the third year for the Horrible Imagining’s Art Show and Film Festival , which kicks off next Wednesday at the 10th Avenue Theatre and Arts Centre and continues for three weeks. The festival’s director, Miguel Rodriguez, describes Horrible Imaginings as, “The first film fest in San Diego to showcase macabre cinema and art." Rodriguez’ mission statement for the festival is to elevate the horror genre, create a conversation about horror, and provide a venue for the artists to achieve the goal of horror as an “expression of a feeling."

The festival will showcase more than 40 shorts and feature films as well as a documentary, a first for the festival. Classics of the genre and new offerings will be featured. Along with the festival, the 10th Avenue Theatre and Arts Centre is featuring a production of “Evil Dead: The Musical” based on the Sam Raimi Evil Dead Trilogy of films. To complement this, one of the classic films Rodriguez is showing at the festival will be Raimi’s “Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn," starring Bruce Campbell of “Burn Notice” fame.

The documentary film “Zero Killed," directed by Michal Kosakowski, is a look at the darker and more murderous side of human nature. The film poses the question “What are your murder fantasies?” to people from all walks of life. Personal interviews, as well as some of those interviewed starring in short films of their own murder fantasies.

Another film featured at the fest is “Gut," directed by Elias, which Rodriguez describes as an “interesting look at horror”.

A Guillermo del Toro produced short film, “The Captured Bird," directed by Jovanka Vuckovic, is one of the many anticipated films being showcased at the festival and has created quite a stir at other festivals around the world.

Animation will also be featured at the fest. The short animated film from Israel “Escape from Hellview” http://www.escapefromhellview.com/, directed by Ryan Spevack, is making the film fest circuit and we’re lucky to have the opportunity to see it here in San Diego.

The art show runs through to November 11th and the film festival runs November 10th and 11th at the 10th Avenue Theater.
