Sure Fire Soul Ensemble celebrates new album, 'Step Down'

As San Diego's music scene continues to reawaken from the slowdown caused by the pandemic, a local band is returning to the stage for one of its first concerts since the pandemic took hold.

The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble brings its funk and soul instrumental music to the Quartyard in San Diego this Saturday May 7 for a record release show.

The band's new album "Step Down" marks its first album since 2019 — one which was largely produced during the height of the pandemic.

"Most of it was recorded during the lockdown period and it was really therapeutic and a way for the band to keep in touch and keep the musical and personal relationship going. So, there's a lot of emotional baggage for lots of us attached to that time. It was like a brave new world that we entered," Sure Fire Ensemble's piano and organ player Tim Felten said.

That meant band members recording music remotely on their own, something they were not accustomed to.

"So it was very much different because we usually make the albums together in the same room at the same time," Felten said.

The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble plays the Quartyard on 1301 Market St. in San Diego this Saturday, May 7 at 5 p.m.
