KPBS Welcomes Theatre Corner to its Television Programming Line-up

On August 7th and 8th, KPBS will welcome a new addition to its viewing catalog – the "Theatre Corner". Co-created by michael taylor and Trevor Neuenswander and produced by NWB Imaging, "Theatre Corner" is a show dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in the national theatre scene, offering interviews with local and celebrity talent, ranging from all professions in the theatre industry.

After a historic appointment as the only Black man to The Old Globe Theatre’s board of directors, taylor knew he had an opportunity to make the theatre experience at the Globe more desirable within the Black community. “Every time I went to The Globe, I would see just a handful of people that looked like me in the audience,” he shared. “Once I got directly involved with The Globe, I created "Theatre Corner" as a small effort to attract more Black folks there. Theatre should be a welcoming space where people can see themselves in it,” taylor said.

While the show’s interviews with notable actors, directors, and playwrights started as a regularly printed submission in The San Diego Voice & Viewpoint Newspaper, it quickly evolved into an online video series, with published episodes across multiple platforms. Filmed in theatres, on set or in the luxurious Westgate Hotel, guests like Debbie Allen, Phylicia Rashad, Alimi Ballard, and L. Peter Callender can be seen with taylor engaging in intimately meaningful dialogue about issues prevalent with people of color in the theatre, television, and cinema spheres.

Four years in and over 60 interviews filmed, taylor discovered an opportunity through KPBS’ Explore Local Content Project, which would allow him a chance to share the show with a broader audience. The KPBS Explore Local Content Project is a collaboration with local producers to grow the quality and quantity of uniquely local content.

"Theatre Corner" will premiere on KPBS2 on August 7th at 8 pm (15.2, Cox 811, Spectrum 1277) and KPBS on August 8th at 4:30 pm (15.1, Cox 1011, Spectrum 1221)
