California and 15 other states have filed a motion to intervene in a lawsuit that argues the Affordable Care Act is illegal.
The lawsuit that challenges the legality of the ACA was filed by Texas and 19 other states in late February.
The suit argues because Congress eliminated the individual mandate penalty, Obamacare is unconstitutional.
At a Monday press conference in Sacramento, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said the lawsuit is dangerous and legally unsound.
“We’ve taken this action to protect the health and financial security of millions of people in our country, as well as the billions of dollars of federal funds that go to our states, to make sure that we can afford the health care that our families need," he said.
Becerra added the sole purpose of the Texas-led challenge is to strip Americans of their health care.
Among the states joining California in its attempt to intervene in the suit are New York, New Jersey and Hawaii.
