National City continued its 100-day COVID-19 Vaccination campaign Thursday with a special clinic at Sweetwater High School.
“We created it to eliminate the barriers because we know that we were an under-vaccinated community, although highly impacted by COVID-19,” said National City Mayor Alejandra Sotelo-Solis on importance of the campaign.
The clinic offered the Pfizer vaccine, which is approved for people 16 and older. The vaccine was administered to hundreds of Sweetwater High School students.
National City Fire Battalion Chief Robert Hernandez and his department assisted at the clinic. He said it was incredibly positive.
“They [the students] were influencing their fellow students to say, ‘Hey, are you not vaccinated. Are you sure? You’re on the fence? I think this is a great idea to create that herd immunity.’ So, they’re actually influencing at the high school level their other fellow students to come in and get vaccinated,” Hernandez said.
Organizers say they hope this effort encourages other school districts to vaccinate their youth.
