Newly declared gubernatorial candidate Neel Kashkari made his first campaign stop on Monday in San Diego. Kashkari toured Ballast Point Brewing Co., in Scripps Ranch.
Kashkari served as assistant secretary of the treasury under President George W. Bush, and helped write legislation related to the federal bank bailout.
Kashkari said he is running for governor to create jobs and give kids a quality education.
“Families want the same two things," Kashkari said, "They want good jobs and they want their kids to get a good education. And I’m going to unite California around these two most important issues and go fight for all of the families in California. I think I can bring a lot more people together and that’s how we’re going to win.”
At Ballast Point, Kashkari tasted a few beers and purchased a six-pack of Calico Amber Ale. Ballast Point’s annual sales have nearly doubled since 2012, and Kashkari said the company is a California success story.
Kashkari declared his candidacy last Tuesday, and faces at least one other Republican in the June primary. Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, has yet to declare if he is running.
