Just in time for shark week, signs advising beachgoers of shark sightings went up on Del Mar beaches Tuesday.
The signs were posted after two juvenile sharks were spotted swimming off the coast. One was spotted off 29th Street on Monday and one was spotted Tuesday off 15th Street, city officials said. A third was spotted early Wednesday morning, Del Mar lifeguard Chief Jon Edelbrock said
The waters off Southern California coast are a known nursery for great white sharks, he said. But, Edelbrock said, he hasn’t seen this much activity since he’s been in San Diego.
Lifeguards from neighboring cities have also reported sightings recently, according to a news release from the city of Del Mar.
The warning signs were posted out of an “abundance of caution” and to follow the protocols from the California Marine Safety Chiefs Association, the release said.
The signs will remain posted until Thursday, at least.
Signs are posted for 24 hours following a confirmed shark sighting, Edelbrock said.
