A 1,500-gallon sewage spill has forced health officials to close San Diego County beaches near the San Elijo Lagoon.
The spill was discovered at about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday and it is blamed on a rupture at the lagoon's Encinitas pump station.
Besides the lagoon, City News Service says beaches are closed north and south of the north county lagoon's ocean outfall.
County spokesman Tom Lambert says warning signs will remain in place until tests show the water is safe.
