Scripps Beach lifeguards are stoked about their newly renovated observation tower. Local contractors donated services to refurbish the tower, which was built in the 1960s. Changes include greater visibility, increased first-aid capacity, a louder public-address system, and increased ventilation.
Councilwoman Sherri Lightener praised the partnership between UCSD and local contractors at a press conference today.
“This beautiful lifeguard tower is proof of what we can do when we work together with a shared vision,” she said. “This tower isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about improving safety at our beaches.”
Lifeguard Chief Rick Wurts said the improvements help lifeguards do their jobs.
“It all starts with water observation for us,” he said. “And having a place where you can concentrate and where you can do an effective job of preventing things from happening, it’s just absolutely critical.”
The tower was remodeled using mostly recycled materials. Solar panels heat and pump the water. Scripps Beach is owned by the University of California.
