The San Ysidro School District last week declared a state of emergency, citing more than 1,500 students who are suffering from some type of homelessness.
The district's Board of Education voted unanimously to declare the emergency, setting the stage for government funding.
San Ysidro School District Superintendent Julio Fonseca said the district has done everything it can to combat student homelessness.
"We've made every attempt to make connections with a lot of different agencies, but with 30 percent of our kids identified as homeless, I think we needed to extend our efforts beyond just our community,” he said.
With a record rainy season predicted, Fonseca said the district plans to open school sites after hours as temporary shelters for homeless students.
