An eighth-grader suffered a serious head injury Friday when an aluminum soccer-goal structure toppled onto him on a playing field at his South Bay school, authorities reported.
The accident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. during a physical-education class at Eastlake Middle School in Chula Vista, according to Sweetwater Union High School District officials.
"We're still trying to figure out exactly what happened, as far as why (the equipment fell)," district spokesman Manuel Rubio said.
Medics treated the 13-year-old victim, who was conscious following the accident, at the campus before airlifting him to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego. A condition update was unavailable as of mid-afternoon.
