A $109 million math and science complex had its grand opening at San Diego Mesa College on Wednesday.
The 206,000-square-foot building is the largest project completed as part of San Diego Community College District's $1.55 billion Propositions S and N construction bond program, according to district officials.
“We care about jobs and that intersection of quality education and job preparedness is what will transform families in our community because this will address the economic needs they have for advancement,” District Chancellor Constance Carroll said.
From several comfortable study areas with energy efficient lighting to computer labs and classrooms equipped with the latest technology, this four-story math and science complex was built with taxpayer bond money and came in under budget from the original estimate of $117 million.
Mesa student Christopher Wyman says the new building has brought students and staff closer together.
"A sense of unity is very important," Wyman said. "It gives one a sense of motivation, inspiration and many different things and it adds definitely a different dimension to the study."
