PPIC Reports High School Students Less Likely To Go To College
A new report finds more California high school students are prepared for college, but fewer of them are attending one of the state’s public colleges or universities.
Demand for higher education is up. But according to the report by the Public Policy Institute of California, the share of the state’s high school graduates enrolling at a UC or CSU campus is down; in 2007, it was 22 percent of all California high school grads. In 2010, it was less than 18 percent.
But the report finds that the share of high school students completing college prep classes is actually up. Over the past few years, both UC and CSU have increased tuition and limited enrollment as a result of state budget cuts. Community college enrollment increased about one percent from 2006 to 2009. The PPIC study also finds the number of high school grads leaving to attend college in other states appears to be up.
