In a first for San Diego county, the National City City Council passed a cannabis ordinance that includes the approval of three cannabis lounges and three cannabis shops.
To date, there are no other cities in the county that have allowed marijuana lounges.
Despite opposition from some in the community, the ordinance passed in a 4-to-1 vote.
Councilman Ron Morrison was the only one who opposed.
“We went from taking it slowly, to now let's get in front of everybody to inexperienced areas,” Morrison said.
Being at the forefront of cannabis policy is something Mayor Alejandra Sotelo-Solis is proud of. She says it will help the city control the marijuana industry.
“Being and dictating what we want to see in our community. We’re moving in a forward direction, and if we have to take a step back, we will,” Solis said.
Some community members express their concerns about the risk this decision can pose to the youth, but Solis said those granted a license will have to comply with a community development agreement that ensures businesses are reinvesting into the community.
