The National Brewer's Association and the San Diego Brewer's Guild are offering brewers a chance to set their product apart from the world's mega breweries.
The national association released a certified independent logo last week that can be affixed to brews that meet their requirements.
The president of the San Diego Brewer's Guild, Jill Davidson, said the move is recognition that craft beer has had an impact on the nation's brewing industry.
Approximately 700 brewers have already applied to add the upside-down bottle with the words brewers association and independent craft to their microbrews.
"The significance of the upside down beer bottle is this, its in reference to the craft brewing industry and how over the last few decades, its pretty much turned the beer community and kind of that whole beer segment on its head because there's been so much innovation and so much choice," Davidson said.
The San Diego Brewers Guild is doing something similar. Guild president Jill Davidson said they have logos that local brewers can put in their windows.
"I encourage everyone to check the windows when they're walking into their favorite local neighborhood brewery and see if you see the San Diego Brewer's Guild member cling hanging in the window," Davidson said.
The San Diego Brewer's Guild is also looking to add tap tags so customers will be able to spot and buy local brews when they are standing at the bar.
Davidson says local brewers will also soon be able to label bar taps if the brew coming out of the spigot meets their standards. The guild is releasing tap tags that will allow customers at bars to quickly see which brews meet their standards.
The extra labeling comes as microbrewers battle for market share with mega-brewers.
The big beer makers have bought up smaller beer companies and use those craft labels to sell their product.
