An immigrant rights group critical of federal border authorities announced plans for "Border Reality Checkpoints" on Wednesday at the San Ysidro crossing, as well as those in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.
"This peaceful activity involves volunteers wearing orange safety vests while they dialogue with border residents about policies that affect all people within the 100-mile border region," according to a statement released by the group Revitalize Not Militarize.
The group contends U.S. Customs and Border Protection has allowed its officers and agents to abuse their power and the rights of border residents with little to no accountability.
Border Reality Checkpoints "are being deployed to send a clear message that major reforms are long overdue," the group's statement says. "This administration can put an end to instances of excessive force, racial profiling, and other abuses at the hands of CBP."
Its website says the checkpoints are an initiative of the Southern Border Communities Coalition and the ACLU of New Mexico Regional Center for Border Rights.
